Owl's Head Park
@ 68th Street and Shore Road, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York
Temporary Public Art Installation by Eirini Lindardaki
Artist(s): Eirini Lindardaki
Title: Raised – the Floating
Dates: Summer 2022 – Spring 2023 (9 months)
Material: Wood, cast cement, polyester resin, paint
Summary of project:
One can view New York’s waterways from Owl's Head Park. From the park you can see the maritime entry to the US for so many immigrants over the past century. Using ordinary recycled objects cast in concrete, this project tells the story of the people who passed through these waterways as immigrants and the people who live or have lived in the neighborhood.
Artist Eirini Linardaki worked with students from Fort Hamilton High School on the initial workshops that led to the development of this project. The students visited her studio in Crete and also worked on a collaborative project with the International School of Heraklion. Each sculpture will be made of what appear to be recycled objects like oil containers, plastic bottles, balloons, chairs, and plastic bags, but they will instead be made of cast cement. The weight of the concrete objects together will make each sculpture several hundred pounds. All pieces will be anchored to the ground using helical stakes for extra security. The stakes will cause little disturbance.
